How Air Purifiers Help Prevent the Spread of Coronavirus

29th September 2020

The air purifier is a device designed to remove air pollutants or contaminants from a room to improve air quality. It is an excellent household item to have, especially now that we are in the middle of a pandemic.

The virus that caused COVID-19, SARS-CoV2, can stay afloat in the air after being expelled by an infected person who coughs, talks, or breathes. Therefore, it can linger around in poorly ventilated rooms and put people at risk of contracting the disease. But with many locations opening at maximum capacity and the cold weather approaching, there is the chance that it could trigger new cases.

Experts still maintain that people must ensure they keep their rooms well-ventilated. That is where the air purifier comes in. But does it have the power to eliminate virus particles in the air?

Can an Air Purifier Protect You from The Coronavirus?

Studies have established that people are more at risk of contracting COVID-19 when they are in poorly ventilated rooms because the virus can linger in the air for an extended period and can be inhaled.

Air purifiers help improve circulation by introducing fresh air while taking out the contaminated air. But can it purify virus-infected air? The answer is no. Not every air purifier can filter out contaminated air.

However, air purifiers with High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are better options, as they can capture at least 99.97% of particles that are about 0.3 microns in size. Even though the virus is significantly smaller (0.125 microns), your HEPA filter purifier might be able to capture and remove the virus when it is enclosed in a droplet.

How to Use an Air Purifier

Air purifiers are relatively easy to use, especially if you are living with an active infected patient; using it will reduce your risk of also getting infected. Experts suggest setting up a purifier at least three feet away from the infected person.

Ideally, your air purifier should run for 24 hours, adjusted to the sick person’s comfort level. You should also ensure that you place it in an open space, free from any obstructions like your curtains. It would be best also to keep your room doors closed. When used properly, your purifier can trap virus particles before they reach you and other members of your household.

You should also ensure that you regularly change your filter, as the virus can live on surfaces for a while. It would be best not to touch the purifier while it is in use. If you have to, then ensure that you put on a pair of gloves and disinfect it. Dispose of the filter properly by keeping it in a sealed bag.

Exercise caution when purchasing air purifiers, especially those that claim to completely eradicate the coronavirus or have UV lights that can kill the virus.

Conclusion

The air purifier is not a one-stop solution to preventing COVID-19. However, it is one of the many preventive measures to take to protect yourself and others around you, especially as the cold weather starts and places open up. Do not forget to stay safe in this season!
